A mother from Brooklyn serves Thanksgiving dinner to New Yorkers on the L train
This week, a woman from Brooklyn set up a full meal in a subway car to feed strangers and invited everyone in New York City to her Thanksgiving dinner.
Strangers enjoying a Thanksgiving meal together on the L train are the subject of numerous online videos, many of which have received more than one million views.
Haylee Pentek of Williamsburg said to the public, “Multiple people mentioned, ‘I’m not going to see my family this year. I’m not able to have a big gathering,’ and they were really grateful.”
Pentek was returning home from work on Tuesday night when she, alongside many different suburbanites, was shocked with a piling plate of food.
They also sold a lot of boxed meals and dinners. Pentek stated, “They also had so many dinners and boxed meals. They were really making sure that everyone who needed or wanted food had an opportunity to eat.”
The chef behind everything is a single mother of three from East New York named Brandi Baxter. In 2019, she participated in a similar stunt with a group of friends. She decided to do it again this year, but this time with just her kids.
“When they boarded the train, their first thought was, ‘What’s going on?’ What’s this? A couple of women asked, “Do you require assistance?”Added Baxter.
They took the L train all the way to Union Square to set up the table after loading the food, table, and settings at the Livonia Avenue station. At that point, dinner was invited to everyone on the train.
“I was like, ‘This is Thanksgiving,’ on the train, and everyone was like ‘Oooh’ and I’m like, ‘Get a plate. ‘They probably didn’t think they would be fed.”When I said, ‘Let’s eat,’ that was it,” Baxter said. They thought it was maybe something else.
However, when you learn her story, her dinner party becomes more meaningful. Baxter and her children were homeless less than a year ago and struggled to feed themselves.
“That’s what it was about, just loving on people. New York is not as bad as they make it seem. I know we have a lot going on right now, but this to be a ray of sunshine, I’m here for it,” Baxter stated.
She prepared enough food for approximately 160 people’s stomachs by cooking for two days.
Daughter Kamara Fraser stated, “I wasn’t really having a great day that day and just to see people helping us give back to the community was fun.”
However, after a few stops, the train stopped running. At last, travelers were approached to step off, and Baxter tidied up the table. However, she was not done. She gave the people she saw on the streets food from the leftovers and took them to her community.
Son Aziah Fraser, advised, “You should always give back, no matter what you have, or even if you have a dollar or a quarter, always give it to a person in need.”
Baxter is not finished yet. She was on her way to drop off clothing boxes at a nearby church when CBS2 first met her. This mother expresses her appreciation throughout the year, not just on Thanksgiving.
According to Baxter, she even gave the food to the MTA conductor and other employees, who were pleased to see her. She stated that the dinner was not the reason the train was stopped, but rather the traffic ahead. A spokesperson for the MTA did not respond.
